How Quality Control Works in Fine Jewelry Manufacturing: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

By Active Design May 9th, 2026 15 views

When you order custom jewelry for your brand, you expect perfection. Every piece must match the approved sample, fit correctly, and withstand daily wear. But how do manufacturers actually ensure that consistency?

Behind every polished ring or pendant lies a rigorous quality control (QC) system – a series of checks and balances that catch defects before they reach your customer. In this article, we take you behind the scenes of Active Design’s QC process, so you understand what to look for in a manufacturing partner and how we guarantee high-quality results.

Why Quality Control Matters in B2B Jewelry Manufacturing

A single defective piece can damage your brand’s reputation. A batch of flawed jewelry can lead to returns, refunds, and lost customers. Quality control prevents these outcomes by:

  • Identifying issues early in production (saving time and money)
  • Ensuring consistency across hundreds or thousands of pieces
  • Verifying that stone settings are secure
  • Confirming metal purity and plating thickness
  • Providing documentation for your own quality assurance

At Active Design, QC is not an afterthought – it is an integral part of every production run.

Our Three-Stage Quality Control Process

We divide QC into three independent stages. Each piece must pass all three before it is approved for packaging and shipping.

Stage 1: Visual Inspection (Pre-Finishing)

Before any stone setting or polishing, every casting undergoes a thorough visual check.

What we look for:

  • Surface pits, porosity, or cracks
  • Sprue marks or excess metal from casting
  • Correct shape and dimensions (using calibrated templates)
  • Any deformities caused by mold or wax issues

What happens if a defect is found:

  • Minor flaws (e.g., small pits) are repaired by laser welding.
  • Major flaws (e.g., cracks) are rejected and sent back for recasting.

✅ Pass rate target: >99% for major defects.

Stage 2: Stone Setting Security Check

Loose stones are a common complaint in poorly made jewelry. We prevent this through two sub-checks:

  1. Prong integrity– Each prong is examined under magnification to ensure it is straight, correctly shaped, and fully seats the stone.
  2. Stone movement test– After setting, each stone is gently pushed with a wooden tool. If there is any movement, the setting is adjusted or the stone is reset.

For pavé and micro-pavé settings, we also run a fine nylon filament over the surface. If it snags, a prong is too high – and we correct it immediately.

🔍 Stone security guarantee: We will replace any stone that falls out due to setting defect within one year of delivery.

Stage 3: Finish & Plating Inspection

After stone setting, pieces move to polishing and plating.

We check:

  • Plating uniformity: No discoloration, bubbles, or thin spots. We use X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to verify gold/rhodium thickness on random samples.
  • Polish quality: Mirror finish? Matte consistency? No scratches or buff marks.
  • Engraving accuracy: Text, font, and placement as per your artwork.
  • Weight verification: Random pieces are weighed to ensure they match the approved sample (±5% tolerance).
  • Fit check: For rings, we verify size with a mandrel. For earrings, we test backs and posts.

Only pieces that pass all three stages move to packaging.

Additional QC Measures We Implement

QC Measure

Description

First Article Inspection (FAI)

The first piece from any bulk run is compared to the approved sample for 100% dimension and finish match.

Batch Sampling

For large orders (>500 pcs), we randomly sample 5% of the batch and repeat all QC checks.

Metal Purity Test

Random samples are sent to an independent lab for XRF analysis to verify gold karat or silver fineness.

Plating Thickness Test

For gold vermeil, we verify the gold layer thickness (≥2.5 microns) using XRF.

What If a Defect Is Found After Shipping?

Despite our high standards, issues can occasionally arise during transit or after prolonged wear. That is why we offer a defect replacement policy:

  • Manufacturing defects (e.g., loose stone, plating peeling within 6 months) – free replacement.
  • Shipping damage – depends on insurance; we help file claims.
  • Normal wear and tear – not covered, but we offer repair services at cost.

We believe that taking responsibility builds long-term partnerships.

How You Can Collaborate on QC

As a B2B client, you are not just a buyer – you are a partner in quality. Here is how you can help ensure the best results:

  1. Provide a detailed tech pack – Include dimensions, stone specifications, plating requirements, and tolerances.
  2. Approve a physical sample – Never skip this step. Your approval becomes the benchmark for bulk QC.
  3. Communicate your AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) – For example, “1% minor defects allowed” helps us prioritize.
  4. Arrange third-party inspection – We welcome independent QC visits or random audits.

Why Active Design’s QC Process Gives You Peace of Mind

  • Three independent checks – No single person approves a piece without peer review.
  • ISO‑compliant documentation – We keep records of every QC check for each order.
  • Fast rework – Defective pieces are remade within 5–7 business days.
  • Transparent reporting – You receive QC photos or videos upon request.

🛡️ Our promise: If a piece fails to meet the approved sample specifications, we replace it at no cost – even if that means remaking the entire order.

Ready to Experience Quality You Can Trust?

Quality control is not just about catching errors – it is about building confidence. With Active Design, you can focus on growing your brand, knowing that every piece is inspected, tested, and guaranteed.
