The Complete OEM/ODM Process: From Sketch to Finished Jewelry

By Active Design May 8th, 2026 16 views

Every great jewelry collection starts with an idea – a sketch on paper, a CAD file, or even just a reference photo. But how does that idea become a finished piece ready for your brand’s customers?

At Active Design, we specialize in turning concepts into high-quality jewelry through our streamlined OEM/ODM process. Whether you’re launching a new brand or expanding an existing line, understanding this process helps you plan better and feel confident in your manufacturing partner.

Below, we walk you through every step of our OEM/ODM journey – from your first sketch to the final polished piece.

Step 1: Share Your Idea

The process begins with you. You provide:

  • Hand-drawn sketches

  • CAD files (STL, .3dm, .step, etc.)

  • Reference images of similar designs

  • Or simply a written description of your vision

No professional drawing skills? No problem. Our design team can interpret rough concepts and transform them into technical drawings.

✅ What happens next:
We review your idea, assess feasibility, and suggest materials, stone options, and construction methods – all while keeping your budget and timeline in mind.

Step 2: CAD & 3D Rendering

Once we agree on the concept, our in-house CAD designers create a detailed 3D model of your jewelry piece.

  • You receive a 360° view of the model

  • Dimensions, stone settings, and metal thickness are clearly shown

  • You can request unlimited revisions until you’re 100% satisfied

This step ensures that every detail – from the curve of a band to the placement of a claw setting – is perfected before any physical material is cut.

🔒 Confidentiality guaranteed:
All CAD files and design data are protected by a signed NDA. We never share or reuse your designs.

Step 3: Physical Sample Production (Wax & Metal)

After CAD approval, we produce a physical sample. This is usually done in two stages:

  1. Wax or resin model (via 3D printing) – for shape and size verification

  2. Metal sample (lost wax casting) – to check weight, balance, and finishing

The sample is cast in your chosen metal (sterling silver, 14K/18K gold, brass, or gold vermeil) and roughly finished so you can see the real look and feel.

✈️ We ship the sample to you
You can inspect the sample, try it on, and even test its durability. Only after your written approval do we move to bulk production.

Step 4: Bulk Production – Rubber Molding & Casting

Once the sample is approved, we create a rubber mold for production. This mold allows us to replicate the design accurately for batch orders.

The lost wax casting process is then used:

  • Wax copies are made from the rubber mold

  • Each wax is invested in a metal flask

  • Molten metal is poured after the wax is burned out

  • Result: precise metal replicas of your design

📦 Low MOQ support
We accept orders as low as 10 pieces per design – perfect for emerging brands or test collections.

Step 5: Assembly, Stone Setting & Finishing

After casting, each piece goes through:

  • Cutting & filing – removing excess metal and smoothing surfaces

  • Stone setting – prong, pave, bezel, or channel setting for diamonds and gemstones

  • Grinding & polishing – achieving the desired shine or matte texture

  • Plating – rhodium, gold, or rose gold plating for extra protection and color

Every component is handled by experienced craftsmen who ensure each piece matches your approved sample.

Step 6: Strict Quality Control (QC)

Before packaging, every piece undergoes three rounds of inspection:

  1. Visual check – scratches, porosity, plating consistency

  2. Dimensional check – weight, size, and stone alignment

  3. Setting check – each stone is tested for secure placement

Only pieces that pass all three checks are cleared for shipping.

🛡️ Your guarantee
We stand behind our work. If any piece does not meet the agreed specifications, we replace it at no extra cost.

Step 7: Secure Packaging & Worldwide Shipping

Finally, your finished jewelry is carefully packed:

  • Bubble bag

  • Outer cartons with foam inserts to prevent movement

  • Labeled with your SKU codes or logo (upon request)

We ship via Brinks,Malca-Amit,DHL, FedEx, UPS, or air freight to any destination. You receive a tracking number and real-time updates.
